No sirens that screamed,
no government warnings to head underground.
Lit'r'ly caught with our pants down
by a beast that struck hard from the sky:
a funnel extreme,
'bout half a mile wide where the beast tapered down.
Not again will you ever hear me say,
"Yeah, that'll happen when pigs fly".
I didn't know
TORNADO ALLEY RAN THROUGH OUR BACK YARD.
TORNADO ALLEY's hitting too close to home.
I didn't know
TORNADO ALLEY would catch us all off guard.
Tornadoes don't grow ... where I come from.
A lightning bolt boomed.
I looked out and saw that thing tearing our way.
'Nother one forming off to the West
up into the black' ning sky.
I ran through the rooms.
I grabbed my wife and kids. Down the basement we stayed
for two days 'til the teams could dig us out.
We're just glad we survived.
CHORUS
Whirlwind whipping, ripping, stripping our homes
from where they'd been sitting for years.
Whirlwind thrashing, crashing, trashing our lives,
leaving nothing but rubble and tears.
I'd thought we were safe.
Tornadoes are rare in this neck of the woods.
You could live 50 years & never hear of one hitting this state.
We're way past afraid.
A tanker truck's flipped where our house had once stood.
Neighbor's house sitting straight up next door,
but it's from two blocks away.
CHORUS
"We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto."
I keep waiting to be waking up from this dream.
"We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto."
This tornado thing sucks big time ...
and it's all just a lot of air.
