In the hustle-tussle of this crazy, screwed-up world,
seems you just can't find the time to catch your breath.
Ev'ry aching muscle wants to stretch out and uncurl.
But you never know when you'll be put to the test.

On a Monday morning in a crowded coffee shop,
couple EMT's on break are asked to help:
pregnant woman's fallen, has a seizure, breathing stops.
But they point to one more bagel up on the shelf.

   "SORRY. WE'RE ON OUR BREAK.
    You'll have to call 911.
    SORRY. WE'RE ON OUR BREAK.
    We're off duty."

Then they pay for breakfast, grab their bags, then out the door,
never once look back to help as workers scream.
Can they be so callous as she dies there on that floor?
And they only pause to grab more packets of cream.

        I'd hate to think The Big Apple is rott-ing at its core.
        I'd hate to think that people just don't care.
        I'd hate to think that compassion's
        just not styl-ish anymore.
        I'd like to think that there are decent folk out there.

    But then,
    up at the Pearly Gates
    when their time to go has come:
