1: Mighty nice of the grocery chain
to provide him with a vehicle for free.
Nice device that could mob'ly contain
his belongings and the fragments of his dreams.
Those dreams are what he lived for, if it's any way to live.
But those dreams and mem'ries eas'ly slip away.

CHORUS:
Runaway cart on a steep busy street,
overloaded way above the brim.
Runaway cart and he's braking with his feet.
But it seems it's going to break away from him.

2: At the top, it was under control
'til he left behind the easy-going streets.
Wouldn't stop as it started to roll.
And there's nothing like when gravity competes.
The irony had missed him as a metaphor to life.
Way too busy tryin' to slow that sucker down.

Chromium sides that didn't conceal the rust.
Cracked & broken handle with the store's name all scratched out.
Piled way too high with seams that were ready to bust.
And all his tragic possessions were taking him down.

3: Not so much that it gained momentum,
but his tired old muscles couldn't hang on for long.
Really sucks that nobody helped him.
But then sidewalks end and things can go real wrong.
I wanted to go help him as he struggled with his life.
But the traffic turned and I was swept away.
