KINGDOM OF THE GUN
( RIDING HIGH )

1: A small, sullen child with a shortage of friends,
I'd stare at the TV for hours on end.
I even did homework while watching the scenes
until I was fully entranced by the screen.

My heroes were real. They were warm & alive;
& off on adventures together we'd ride.
Just how it occurred, can't explain or recall,
but it seems I was totally absorbed by it all.

2: Yes, Hopalong gave me my very own horse,
a spirited prancer, palomino, of course.
Gene Autry supplied me with two guns of steel,
& Roy Rogers taught me to shoot them quite well.

Lone Ranger & Tonto, on each side of me,
together we caught Mercer's Gang at Bear Creek.
& one day, I'm sent on assignment alone.
Single-handed, I captured Garth Hud & Bret Stone.

CHORUS:
Riding high out on the prairie,
Riding high into the sun.
Riding high, only the daring
riding through the kingdom of the gun.

3: My mother would ask me just where had I been.
I'd tell her with Tonto, my close Injun friend.
She'd spank me for lying; I'm sent to my room
to wait for my father who's coming home soon.

Again, I'd be punished for telling such lies.
& I soon enough learned how to live in disguise,
not tell them the truth of what really went on
when I'm out roping outlaws who lived by the gun.
CHORUS:

4: One day on returning from Cimarrontown,
I found the Lone Ranger & Tonto pinned down.
with Hopalong wounded, Roy tied to a tree
& Autry in Kansas, it's all up to me.

& perched as I was high atop Cutler Hill,
I plotted my actions with cunning and skill.
But just as I started my bold rescue scheme,
I am told I should grow up & not live in dreams.
CHORUS:

CODA:
From inside the TV, a beckoning call
to ride on for justice & freedom for all.
But now that I'm older, I can't play that game,
so I turn off the TV & then walk away.

Had I glanced o'er my shoulder,
I just might have seen
riding off through the sunset,
Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, the Lone Ranger
... & me.
CHORUS:
