I AIN'T BEGGING

1: His furry black friend lay patiently at his feet.
They each had a gray-whiskered jaw.
They neither did leave
his tattered old wheelchair seat,
parked next to the door of the mall.
2: A tiny black amp cranked all of the way past "10",
a cheap copycat of a Strat
crunched all of those tunes
from way before way-back-when
for the cash that was tossed in a hat.
CHORUS:
"I ain't begging", he kept saying.
"I'm only playing for the money.
I'm only playing for the paying,
which ain't that much.
I ain't begging", he kept saying.
"I'm only playing for the money.
I'm only playing for the paying
& not the touch."
3: His grizzled old face I'd see going to the store.
He'd sing like a howl at the moon.
I used to toss change
& probably'd give him more
if he only would sing more in tune.
CHORUS:
BRIDGE:
Life in a bottle, living out on the edge,
can only go so far so fast.
Life in a bottle, one day it'll hit the dregs
and then you find it's all gone past.
4: He wasn't all that outgoing. He was quite gruff.
He'd barely look past his guitar.
Would I have been more
attentive, a bit less tough,
if I'd known that he once was a star?
CHORUS:
