Skid Row isn't all that scenic,
not your standard tourist fare.
The tour bus guides of old Hollywood
never show this side of town.
Skid Row isn't for the squeamish:
a thickness chokes the air.
There's a gray cloud low over ev'rything
in this magnet of the lost & down.

Midnight at the Midnight Mission,
an ambulance pulls up
& tries to leave a- homeless man
strapped- down at the mission's door.
Midnight, he's in no condition,
still needing follow-up,
& the guards refuse to accept him in
when he's clearly needing so much more.

    "Hospital takes a dump", the headlines read.
    Hospital takes a dump. At least the patient's not dead.
    No insurance, no money, no fam'ly:   no go.
    Paraplegic, half-conscious, he's dropped on Skid Row.
    Hospital takes a dump.

Drivers wheel him back on the gurney
& the ambulance pulls out,
returning back to the hospital,
returning to the dark.
A diff'rent driver on a different journey
& the same man gets let out,
just a block away from the Mission,
at the edge- of a vagrants' park.

    CHORUS

        This wasn't just the first time. For sure it's not the last.
        You'd think that simple caring would put this in the past.

        Driver puts on perfume & make-up
        as the patient crawls away
        in the gutter with a torn colostomy bag,
        soiled- hospital gown that's barely a rag,
        in the gutter as he's barely able to drag
        himself up out of the way.
