FRANKLINTOWN FLOOD
( NOWHERE TO HIDE ? )

1: There was a flood in Franklintown,
not forty miles from here.
& everyone within was drowned
except for Thomas Sear.
A sullen youth with biting tongue
& fits that often raged,
his sallow face, forever young,
had eyes quite filled with age.

The rumors spread before the flood
from Franklintown to here
of something strange & far from good
that held the town in fear.
It seems each month a child was lost
if near the woods alone.
Search as they might to find the cause,
each month a child was gone.

CHORUS:
Is there nowhere to hide in Franklintown?
Is there nowhere to hide? Nowhere at all?

2: In Franklintown, the people seemed
a superstitious lot.
& accusations flew and screamed
with tempers running hot.
They noticed that the moon was round
when each child disappeared.
& someone heard a wailing sound,
a torture to their ears.

The parents locked their young inside,
behind their shuttered walls.
The streets became a dismal sight,
with no one out at all,
'Cept Thomas Sear, with leering smile,
who wandered through the town.
& still each month a missing child
was never to be found.
CHORUS:

3: Sam Fleet, the judge, & Heinz, the mayor,
called for the town to meet
in grocer Becker's storefront where
they'd hear Dan Wilburn speak.
In halting voice & nervous tick,
the frightened crowd was told
how Thomas Sear missed days of work
each time the moon was full.

With nothing more on which to go,
the town devised its scheme.
& Thomas Sear was jailed to prove
if things were as they seemed.
But when the moon had just reached full,
the jailer, Potts, went blind.
& Thomas Sear escaped on foot,
but left his clothes behind.
INSTRUMENTAL BREAK:

4: A good four days they searched in vain
(another child was gone),
'til Thomas showed for work again
as if nothing was wrong.
The crowd was ripe for vengeance, now:
the parents wanted blood.
The sheriff barely held them back
from doing what they would.

It seemed as though the rain began
the same time as the trial,
& for a month, it soaked the land
until the moon was full.
Above the mills of Franklintown,
an earthen dam once loomed.
The verdict that was handed down
had guaranteed its doom.
CHORUS:

CODA:
There was a flood in Franklintown,
not 40 miles from here.
& everyone within was drowned ...
except for Thomas Sear.
