FORTY BIBLES

I read it in the paper that Lester Fox had died.
No one was really sorry; nobody even cried.
But justice cried for vengeance & someone must be tried.
Poor Willy was the last one seen with the man alive.

Poor Willy was my father, 'though just my mother knew.
He said he had no motive, which was not quite the truth.
For each man had his motive to give Les Fox the screw.
& I was picked for jury to be one of the few.

FORTY BIBLES don't make a difference to me-.
FORTY BIBLES can't force a blind man to see-.

I could not let it known I, in some way, was involved.
I had to keep my secret until the case was solved.
& to this very purpose I found myself resolved:
to see that old Poor Willy should get the best of trials.

The courtroom
, it was crowded. Judge Crory did preside.
Poor Willy had no person in whom he could confide.
I wept in silent anguish to see how he was tried.
By testimony given, it seemed someone had lied.

    CHORUS

Each witness
cross-examined just added one more strand
upon the web of mystery that cloaked the culprit's hand.
By circumstantial evidence, he seemed a guilty man.
The noose was 'round Poor Willy until he took the stand.

He swore on FORTY BIBLES the things he said were true.
We could not help believe him; we knew not what to do.
& when the trial was ended & we discussed our views,
we found the judge intended Poor Willy could not lose.

    CHORUS

We never found the killer, but Willy was set free.
Poor Justice had been thwarted because she could not see.
& each man has his memories & those he'd rather leave.
Poor Lester Fox was buried & no one was bereaved.
