would help him settle scores.
A jilting by a girlfriend there,
an unearned failing grade,
a snide remark by a former friend:
there was so much face to save.

Like his Daddy'd taught him: "squeeze, don't pull",
he stalked his helpless game.

    without limits to the top.
    When will we say we've had enough?
    When will we make it stop?

    as the epidemic soars.
    Until it hits your own back yard,
    there's always room for more.

He really fit the picture well.
& his face now fills the screen
of every TV 'cross the land
as they show the horrid scene,
of blood and bodies strewn about
as ambulances race
to save a red-soaked victim's life:
yet another deadly chase.

and somebody'd read the signs.
Yes, but no one did just quite enough
to keep him from his crime.

        There's a plethora of causes
        for every social ill.
        But do we need to make it so damned
        easy for an urge to kill?

He'd been taught all the righteous traits
right along with handling guns.
But it seems somewhere along the way
he forgot an important one.
The one that says, "thou shall not kill",
in no uncertain terms,
to some, it seems, has been replaced
by the right for bearing arms.
Another grisly headline here:
more grist for the tabloid mill.
If the copycats don't shoot you down,
then someone's children will.

        a bumper sticker on a pickup truck
        has the gruesome nerve to say:   [Spoken:]
