DAWN TO DUSK AFTER DISASTER ON
The BICCI & ONRI RailRoad
207 Squalor Hollow Road
Broakdowlne, California
September 31, 1927
Dear Cousin Philbur,
Daybreak finds our not-so-intrepid roundhouse crew already busy, albeit not quite work as usual.
Instead of the scheduled work load as regularly posted on Monday's clipboard by Foreman Barnswell Fathoms, ...
well, there is no more clipboard.
There is barely an engine house. You could say it is now ventilated to the extreme.
Since the disastrous fire two nights ago, things have not been quite the same.
Thank goodness no one was seriously injured.
Not only hampered by the already limited facilities usually available to service the Bicci & Onri's engines,
the crew's responsibilities have catapulted to the heavens.
Strict orders of the highest nature have been dealt from above to utilize every available
moment to uncover Engines #38 and 63, determine what is salvageable,
and get the shop back into full operation as quickly as possible.
To expedite matters, extra locals from Broakdowlne have been hired to help unbury the wreckage.
Cautions voiced by the railroad's legal counsel, J. Barry Astrachan (of Schenker & Rhodes, et al),
were thrown aside by the managing partner, Salvatore Bicci, claiming he didn't "hold no truck for
no Federal snoops meddlin' 'round in our fam'ly business, slowin' us down an' stirrin' up trouble".
The fire inspectors are supposed to arrive from Sacramento later today. Railroad hands and
townies alike were amazed at the uncharacteristic swiftness with which the management reacted
to the fire in order to begin the cover-, ... er, ... clean-up.
Usually things around here are given ample space and time to just rust and rot.
